Cycling is a national sport in Belgium. It’s part of the culture, it’s in their blood. And as an Aussie I’ve always felt that Belgium is the heart of the cycling world. It’s the place that made me really fall in love with the sport.
After having raced those epic roads, and as a non-european, I had always wondered what it was like for a Belgian to grow up with cycling all around them and the expectation racing those Cobbled Classics.
Jens Keukeleire is a great mate and a Belgian that I’ve known and raced with over many years, first at GreenEDGE and now this year at EF Education First.
He started off his career making waves as a Neo-pro in the Belgian classic races, and is one of the guys you’ll still see up the front in all those races today.
It was great to pick his brains about racing on the home roads in Belgium, his experience in lockdown and what we might expect for this October edition of Paris-Roubaix!
And really, I just loved having another reason to chat classics.
Stay tuned to Life in the Peloton for my episode of Talking Luft with Jens next week.
Enjoy everyone!
Cheers,
Mitch
