It’s the month of May, and it’s hard not to think about being in Italy at this time of year, and especially at one of the hardest yet one of the best races on the calendar, the Giro d’Italia. Any pro you speak to will tell you how special that race is, with a passion and love from the fans like no other.
I’ve had some pretty great experiences at the Giro, but one that stands out is being part of the Teams Time Trial win with Orica Greenedge back on Stage 1 in Belfast in 2014, with Svein Tuft taking the pink jersey and Matthews keeping it in the team for the first week.
Winning a stage of a Grand Tour is a moment you can only dream of in this sport. Winning a stage of a Grand Tour with 8 of your teammates really is even better.
I sat down with 7 of those teammates to re-live that epic win. Hear from Michael Matthews, Cam Meyer, Svein Tuft, Luke Durbridge, Michael Hepburn, Brett Lancaster, Pieter Weening and our Sports Director Matt White.
That Giro went down as one of the most epic ever for Orica-Greenedge. Starting with a stage win and the pink jersey to everything taking a turn for the worst, and the team finishing the Grand Tour with only 2 riders.
There were so many stories I hadn’t heard from that Giro and as you’ll hear each day really was a different battle for each guy.
It was amazing to re-live this with all the boys. One of the best moments in my career and the days that followed.
I hope you enjoy the insight, let me know what you thought!
