Jimmy Whelan – Learning the ropes

Welcome to the first episode of the 2020 season and our first episode in collaboration with The Cycling Podcast family.

We’re happy to be on board with The Cycling Podcast to bring you the same great poddie, with a few tweaks to make it truly music to your ears.

In this episode, I catch up with my EF Education First teammate Jimmy Whelan, or ‘Half-Whelan’ as we nicknamed him after last year’s pre-season training camp because of his eagerness to get stuck in having just turned pro.
I caught up with Jimmy on the eve of his second season in the World Tour to find out what he learned from his debut year, which as you’ll hear, wasn’t all “living the dream”. As a young Australian turning pro, the necessary move to Europe adds a whole other element to life that can be challenging at times. It was great to hear how Jimmy was able work through it to come into his second season stronger.

I hope you enjoy our chat and get a little insight into what that first year pro can be like as an Australian.

Cheers, Mitch
